• Beyond the Ordinary series has been the most successful campaign for Philips TV, with adventure sports movies ‘Lightwaves’ (surfing) and ‘Afterglow’ (skiing) attracting a huge viral following and winning multiple awards
  • Adventure sports theme continues with incredible night-time mountain biking scenes in desert and forest enhanced by sensational wide area LED lighting
  • Darklight features three of the world’s top mountain bike riders – Graham Agassiz, Matt Hunter and Matty Miles – and used specially modified equipment from Specialized and TomTom Bandit
  • Campaign marks the launch of Philips 8000 TVs with four-sided Ambilight.

Amsterdam, October 20th, 2015 – TP Vision presents the spectacular mountain bike movie ‘Darklight’, the latest night-time extreme sports film in the hugely successful ‘Beyond the Ordinary’ campaign designed to demonstrate the impact of the company’s unique Ambilight technology.

Darklight is the third film in the series, all of which have used the power of light to enhance the visual action of adventure sports with previous films featuring high impact footage of surfing (Lightwaves) and skiing (Afterglow). The content has also been specially created to demonstrate the enhanced, immersive TV viewing experience provided by Ambilight.

In addition to Philips social media channels, the movies will continue to feature on You Tube and Vimeo and also on the web sites and social channels of selected media partners throughout Europe, Russia, the Middle East and South America. The sports have also been selected for their strong communities and their appeal to younger audiences both of which have led to the ‘Beyond the Ordinary’ films enjoying exceptional viral success.

Darklight continues the theme and features three of the world’s top mountain bike ‘pros’ tackling night-time routes through desert and forest settings featuring wide LED lit landscapes in this extraordinary ground-breaking movie.
The movies also provide perfect content for in-store demonstration of the unique Ambilight technology – found only on Philips TV sets – which creates a halo of light and changing colours to precisely match the on-screen images, on the wall behind the set, providing an extended, enhanced and more immersive viewing experience.

Stunning night scenes

Darklight shows the Canadian trio of Graham Agassiz, Matt Hunter and Matty Miles riding routes through the moon-like setting of the southern deserts of Utah and Arizona and the lush forests of Oregon. The scenes were shot throughout the night with the wide scale landscapes bathed in ever changing coloured light.

All of the film was created and shot on 4K Dragon cameras and TomTom Bandit Action Cams, rather than by computer and CGI, with the extreme terrain often requiring both filming by specially prepared camera drones and the crew of 30 to physically ‘hike’ over six tons of equipment into place.

Specialist equipment

The demanding settings and night time shoots required specially adapted equipment to be used by all involved. Specialized and TomTom Bandit Action Cam were the perfect partners to provide specially adapted bikes and action cams for the riders.

The end results have certainly more than justified the efforts taken. The riders and bikes leave ever-changing LED trails as they seem to defy gravity while hurtling down vertical-mountain faces bathed in coloured light. Forest floors resemble alien landscapes as 171 LEDs allow plants to literally glow in the dark.

Darklight succeeds in using the power of light to enhance an already dramatic scene and as such provides the perfect demonstration content for an Ambilight TV. The combination produces, for Philips TV consumers, a viewing experience far beyond the ordinary.

Supporting quotes

‘The beauty of the film’ is the way that viewers initially are forced to suspend their belief in what’s actually possible but as they watch they become aware that it is actually real life and that it is the power of light that is taking what they know and putting it into a totally different dimension’. Mike Brown producer for Sweetgrass Productions

The reaction to the ‘Beyond the Ordinary’ campaign has been truly exceptional, in part because we have deliberately targeted adventure sports for their ability to reach a new and engaged audience for Ambilight and Philips TV. Darklight will continue to expand that pool, demonstrating how Ambilight can take the TV viewing experience into a new, more immersive dimension.’ Marc Harmsen, Global Marketing Lead at TP Vision
