Philips TV – 2016 range overview

The recent arrival of the EISA award winning 65PUS7601, and the IFA launch of the 55” 901F, completes the Philips TV  2016 range line-up, creating one of the most comprehensive TV product ranges currently available.

The addition of Smart TV features to the new 5000 Series also means that over 90% of Philips TVs are now Smart with more than 70% using the Android platform

The list below gives an outline to each series and identifies key specification differences in the overall product range.

4000 Series

The Philips TV 4000 series has been refreshed with ‘future-proof ‘HEVC broadcast support.

4000 Series products have a performance rating of 200 PPI and include Digital Crystal Clear picture processing, 2 x HDMI connectors and 1 x USB (2.0) connection.

The new entry-level 4000 sets also have both integrated satellite and terrestrial tuner options.

5000 Series

The 5000 Series represents a clear step-up in terms of both performance and design to the 4000 range and is also the first of Philips’ series to include SMART TV functionality  and Android sets.

The 5000 series also starts with a unique concept within the Philips TV range with the 5231 model, a 24” set that effectively combines a TV and Bluetooth speaker in one integrated solution, all finished in a white, elegant design.  The 5231 features a 16W, 2.1 sound system (2x4W + 1x 8W sub) and allows music from smart devices to be ‘pushed’ via Bluetooth connection – giving the option of using the 5231 as a dedicated Bluetooth speaker

The unique design of the 5231 was officially recognized earlier this year with a Red Dot product design award.

Newly introduced to the 5000 series is the 5301 model, which brings Philips Smart TV functionality and HEVC broadcast support to an entry-level set.

Top of the 5000 series are the 5501 sets which are  the first Android products in the 2016 Philips TV line-up and offer dual core processors plus 8GB of expandable storage and wi-fi connectivity..

The 5501 sets also feature a light, metal design with a slim bezel and aluminium pinch stands.

6000 Series

The 6000 Series offers a wide selection of Ultra HD products and is also the first series to offer HDR performance, and includes the first products in the 2016 range to offer the unique halo of Philips Ambilight technology.
The latest models in the series are the 6031 and 6101 models which offer UHD performance and Philips Smart TV system in a more affordable design.

The Android TV platform is featured heavily throughout the 6000 series. Android sets are Quad core with either 8GB or 16GB of expandable memory on-board and include the IR remote control with the reverse mounted QWERTY keyboard for better integration with the Android UI.

The 6500 series sets offer improved picture processing, motion reproduction and higher light outputs due to the inclusion of high-end chipsets, Pixel Precise Ultra HD processing, the Perfect Natural Motion system and 100HZ native panels. The design of the 6000 series also closely mirrors Philips hi-end sets, especially with the 6500 models with their light metal finish and chrome arch stand, designed to give the impression of a floating set.

7000 Series

A move up to the 7000 Series brings high-end European design, wide colour gamut panels, 3-sided Ambilight, Quad core processing and 16GB of internal memory.

Sound quality is also a key selling point with the 7000 series which features high power, 2.1 rear-firing sound systems using a patented Triple ring driver installation with an integrated bass port to allow deep but accurate bass. The 7181 set takes sound quality one step further by adding ‘visible’ sound with a separate 15W sound bar neatly integrated into the front of the set.

Top of the 7000 range is the 7601 featuring many of the technologies previously found in Philips reference 9000 series, including local 2D dimming from 128 independent LED segments that can generate a 700 Nit peak light output to give the set HDR Premium status.

Philips Premium Colour processing helps the 7601 reproduce 2 250 trillion colours and combines with Perfect Pixel Ultra HD processing to give an exceptional picture performance score of 2600PPI.  A performance level that has allowed the set to claim the 2016 EISA European Best Buy Large TV Award.

The 7601 also has unique open frame chromed stand to compliment the brushed aluminium bezel and polished aluminum sides in a dark silver finishing.

8000 Series

The 8000 Series is reserved for premium sets with unique premium features.

The 8601 includes a unique, superb 2 x 10W sound system featuring 16 neodymium drivers mounted in detachable speaker columns with the option to add further speakers contained within optional active speaker stands.  A sensitive use of chrome and hairline brushed aluminium gives the 8601 a sophisticated, modern look while the full chrome arc stand creates the impression that the set is floating.

Ambilight plays a key role in the performance and immersive qualities of all Philip’s mid and hi-end TVs and reaches a new peak in the 65” 8901 AmbiLux model which includes nine pico projectors to project both colours and content from the on-screen images onto the wall behind the set.

901F

Top of the Philips TV 2016 range, is the 901F, the company’s first OLED model and the first to combine a wide colour gamut OLED panel with Philips’ top processing suite. The Perfect Pixel Ultra HD engine combines Ultra resolution, Perfect Contrast and Perfect Natural Motion technology with the Perfect Colour system and a 17bit colour booster to allow the set to display exceptionally sharp images, smooth motion and over 2250 trillion colours.

The overall result is an incredible performance score of 3800 PPI and, with a peak light output of 540Nit, making the 901F the first Philips TV set to reach the company’s HDR Perfect standard.

The vibrancy of on screen colours and the super high contrast ratio are enhanced and made more immersive by the inclusion of a 3-sided Ambilight system. The 901F also features a 6.1, 30-Watt sound system with 15W for six forward firing drivers – via an integrated sound bar – and 15W for rear firing drivers using the patented Triple ring technology and an integrated bass port.
